GASTROLOGY
- HAEMORRHOIDS, also known as piles, are swellings that contain enlarged blood vessels that are found inside or around the bottom (the rectum and anus).
Most haemorrhoids are mild and sometimes don't even cause symptoms. When there are symptoms, these usually include:
- bleeding after passing a stool (the blood will be bright red)
- itchy bottom
a lump hanging down outside of the anus, which may need to be pushed back in after passing a stool
- IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon). Irritable bowel syndrome commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation.
- ANAL FISSURE is a tear or ulcer (open sore) that develops in the lining of the anal canal.
The anal canal is the last part of your large intestine, and is located between your rectum (a reservoir where stools are stored) and your anal orifice (the opening through which stools are passed out of the body).
The most common symptoms of anal fissures are:
- a sharp pain when you pass stools (faeces), often followed by a deep burning pain that may last several hours
- bleeding when you pass stools – most people notice a small amount of bright red blood either in their stools or on the toilet paper
- ULCERATIVE COLITIS is a long-term condition, where the colon and rectum become inflamed.The colon is the large intestine (bowel), and the rectum is the end of the bowel where stools are stored.
Small ulcers can develop on the colon's lining, and can bleed and produce pus.
The main symptoms of ulcerative colitis are:
- recurring diarrhoea, which may contain blood, mucus or pus
- abdominal (tummy) pain
