Sciatica is a clinical condition where the pain begins in the lower back region and then radiates to one or both legs because of compression of the nerve root i.e sciatic nerve emerging the from lower back spine by a disc bulge.
CAUSES:
The most common cause of sciatica is a bulge in the disc which is present between the vertebrae of the lower back due to excessive strain of the compressing the nerve root emerging from the subsequent vertebrae.
SYMPTOMS:
1.One experiences pain in the lower back region because of some injury or some degenerative changes taking place in lower back spine , which occurs as a normal aging process.
2. If disc bulge is on the left side then the side sciatic nerve gets compressed and thereby lead to pain in the left leg and vise versa .
3. Along the course of sciatic nerve the individual experiences pain ,numbness in thigh, legs and feet.
DO / DON’T’S:
Do exercise regularly to strengthen the back muscles.
Avoid lifting and avoid bending forward,
Use belt to support the backbone while travelling and while driving vehicle.
Avoid Lying on bed which is uneven, so that muscle strains or spasm are minimised.
Heavier individuals are not advised to sit on the floor.
